Christina Tumbleson art style

Becoming an artist is a lot more difficult than simply picking up a pencil or paintbrush and creating. Sometimes the act of declaring a style can be more overwhelming than most would-be artists would realize.

Finding the right art medium is important in the creation of art. There are specific mediums and niches within that can help you get a better idea of where you are most creative. For art, there are a few different styles to keep in mind.

Study Artists That You Admire

One of the best ways to discover your art style is to really study the works of the artists that most pique your interests. Read as many books as you can and pay attention to the subtle differences between mediums and styles.

Study your favorite artist to see if their style fits and try to create something that you base on that. Try getting outside of your comfort zone as well.

Practice and Be Okay with Imperfection

Another way to find out where you fit in terms of style is to work with different techniques. If you don’t really have a starting point, then working with various techniques is a great way to find out which one suits you best.

No matter what you are trying, be okay with the imperfections. Art is imperfect, and each artist has imperfections that make the work compelling in its own right. Keeping a journal or starting a blog is a great way to get feedback as well.

Find the Story

Behind every great work of art, there is a story. Finding your artistic voice, which is what the piece says about you or a subject matter, is vital to finding your style. Don’t just use colors; know why you are using those colors.

There should be a specific reason behind each creation. Think through that process, and you can find a greater understanding of why your style is the way that it is. It takes time and effort to find that story within.
